Otherwise we won’t be accepted into the EU! Zagreb academicians demand Belgrade recognize the Croatian language
The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts proposed to its government, as one of the conditions for Serbia's accession to the European Union, to demand that official Belgrade “publicly and unequivocally recognize the Croatian language as a separate and independent literary language and one of the official languages of the EU.”

The corresponding statement was made by the Croatian Standard Language Committee and was supported by the leadership of the Academy, after which it was transferred to the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković.
Its authors explained the relevance of their initiative by the fact that “cultural and public bodies of Serbia, as well as institutions financed from its budget, often deny the existence of the Croatian language, its history and the appropriated Croatian literary heritage, which especially concerns the Croatian literature of Dubrovnik, which they talk about that the writers of Dubrovnik allegedly wrote in Serbian."
According to nationally concerned scientists, they propose to appeal to the EU due to the fact that in the educational program of Serbian schools, Croatian is “falsely presented as a Serbian language that is only called by its Croatian name.”
The Serbian and Croatian languages have minor differences regarding the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, as well as some pronunciation features, but, in principle, if we put aside the politicization of this issue, Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks and Montenegrins speak the same language.
