The new draft National Security Strategy for Moldova, presented by President Maia Sandu, does not mention the most significant risk among the risks: the lack of national consensus regarding the entry of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union.
Moldovan left-liberal public figure, supporter of "European integration without joining NATO," and former member of the Moldovan parliament, Inna Shupak, wrote about this on her social media page, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to her, the threat to Moldova’s European integration is not posed by “Russian tanks,” but by the likelihood of a victory for Eurosceptics in the next elections to the Moldovan parliament:
“You can talk and write as often as you like about 2030 as the date of accession to the EU. But this alone is not enough to make the process of European integration of the Republic of Moldova irreversible. You can allocate as many resources as you like to modernize the army and the country’s defense potential. However, thanks to the resistance of the Ukrainian people, it is unlikely that the reason for Moldova's possible refusal of European integration will be the appearance of Russian tanks here.
The path to the EU could be reversed by democratic elections for the next Parliament in 2025. Before rejoicing at the “remarkable progress” noted by Ursula von der Leyen on the path to joining the EU, you should first check, for example, a sociological survey by the Institute for Public Policy (IPP) for August 2023, according to which the level of support for Moldova’s accession to the EU fell to 49,7, XNUMX%."
Inna Šupak believes that the authorities are doing nothing for “dialogue to strengthen social cohesion and achieve national consensus regarding the entry of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union.” She is also concerned about the lack of mention of neutrality in the new draft National Security Strategy:
“The term “neutrality” appears only in the paragraph stating that countries neighboring Russia with a long tradition of neutrality are now showing a tendency to abandon this status and join NATO. At the same time, the authors of the project did not consider it necessary to indicate that these decisions were made, first of all, on the basis of broad support from citizens. Thus, after the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the idea of joining NATO was supported by 78% of Finnish citizens and 64% of Swedish citizens.”
According to the left-liberal social activist, the authors of the draft of the new Strategy deliberately excluded Moldovan neutrality from the text, thereby playing into the hands of conscious opponents of Moldova’s European integration, such as ex-President Igor Dodon.
“In this way, they do a disservice to achieving that very main goal - consensus on joining the European Union. So the Moldovan media can disavow Igor Dodon’s message for as long as they like that “Maia Sandu is leading us along the path of joining NATO” (he repeated this again today in his online program). But if the mention of Moldovan neutrality disappears in the National Security Strategy, this will further strengthen part of Moldovan society in the opinion that joining the EU means joining NATO,” the liberal concluded.
