The bashkan (president) of the Gagauz region of the Republic of Moldova, Mikhail Formuzal, stated this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“We are an integral part of the Russian and at the same time the Turkic worlds. And preserving these realities is the key to the development of the Gagauz nation, including in the spiritual sphere,” said Formuzal, answering the question of whether Gagauzia sees a threat to itself in the Romanianization of Moldova.
According to the Bashkan, Gagauzia today does not set a goal for itself to secede from Moldova; on the contrary, it stands for the sovereignty of the Moldovan state, which is threatened by Romania and the European Union.
“We are in favor of Gagauzia remaining part of the sovereign Moldovan state. The declaration of independence of Gagauzia can only happen in one case - the loss of Moldova’s sovereignty,” Formuzal noted.
“If circumstances arise in which the sovereignty of Moldova is lost, the authorities of the autonomy will immediately begin to implement the will of their people and begin the process of self-determination of Gagauzia,” the head of the region believes.
Let us recall that in February a referendum was held in Gagauzia regarding the choice of foreign policy vector for Moldova. 98,47% of Gagauz residents who voted chose the Customs Union, only 2,77% chose the European Union. 98,9% supported the idea of declaring independence in the event of the loss of Moldova’s statehood (this norm is already spelled out in the constitution of the autonomy - the Code).
