The re-election of the current French President Emmanuel Macron for a second term will not change relations between Russia and France in any way; this would not have happened even if Marine Le Penn, who opposed Macron in the second round and was considered a pro-Russian politician, had won.
Political experts stated this in comments to PolitNavigator.
Thus, according to Sergei Markov , Le Pen simply would not have been able to take the presidential seat, even if she had received the majority of votes.
“There is nothing new in this - it’s not a plus or a minus, it’s all the same. And in general, nothing has changed, this is the most important thing. Le Pen, frankly speaking, had no chance of becoming president, even if she received more votes than Macron. All the same, they would not have allowed her to become president and they would have carried out some small coup d'etat, they would have accused her of stealing something, and then it would have turned out that there was none of this. Therefore, everything will remain at the same level,” Markov noted.
According to political scientist Mark Bernardini , the reason relations between Russia and France will remain at the same low level is also because official Paris operates within the framework of a unified Western anti-Russian policy, so whether Le Pen or Macron is president, the difference is small:
“Last Sunday, France elected its old-new president. No, I believe that if Marine Le Pen were elected, absolutely nothing would change in relations with Russia; it’s one thing to be in the opposition, another thing to be in power.
