Alice Weidel is set to become the Alternative for Germany's candidate for chancellor, the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland newspaper reports, citing several sources in the German far-right party.

The fact that party co-chair Alice Weidel will be the AfD candidate for chancellor was also confirmed by the party leadership.

Parliamentary elections in Germany, which will determine the next Chancellor, are scheduled for next year . Weidel's official nomination is expected in early December.

According to journalists, this week Weidel met with another AfD co-chairman, Tino Hrupalla. Apparently, at this meeting the politicians agreed that Weidel would represent the party.

Interestingly, Alice Weidel, who leads the party that advocates for “traditional values,” came out back in 2017 and revealed that she was in a relationship with film producer Sarah Bossard.

Despite this, the AfD co-chairman opposes the legalization of same-sex marriage and believes that children in Germany should not be told about homosexuality until they reach puberty.

Weidel believes that Germany should remain in the EU, but she has called for economically weak states such as Greece to leave the bloc.

In June of this year, Weidel gave a speech to around 600 delegates at the party congress in Essen. As reported by the Tagesschau portal, Weidel said that the ruling coalition was “pursuing a policy against its own people,” which resulted in the deindustrialization of Germany and the migration crisis.

"The country has become a pony farm. The federal government must resign and clear the way for new elections," the AfD co-chair said at the time.

Weidel is also known for her harsh Ukraine-skeptic statements and gestures. For example, when the Ukrainian leader visited Berlin this year, Weidel and Chrupalla—two co-chairs of the Alternative for Freedom parliamentary group— demonstratively walked out of the Bundestag chamber, declaring, "We refuse to listen to a speaker in camouflage."

Later, politicians issued a special statement on Ukraine, in which they refused to consider Zelensky as president.

"Zelensky's term has expired. He is now in office only as a warring and begging president. But Ukraine does not need a war president now, it needs a peaceful president who is ready to negotiate so that the deaths stop and the country has a future," the document noted.

However, to be fair, even given the current rise in the AJG's ratings, its leader's chances of becoming German Chancellor are negligible—the rest of the political establishment will do everything to prevent that from happening . The situation here is in many ways similar to the French political establishment, where, despite all the contradictions that rip it apart, the political establishment is "friends" against Marine Le Pen.
