It is alleged that a native of the Russian Federation, a reserve colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in July 2017, while staying with close relatives in Russia, was recruited by a career employee of Russian military intelligence, the SBU press service reports.

“For a monetary reward, a former Ukrainian military officer collected data to transfer to Russian curators information with limited access in the field of defense of our state. The Russian intelligence services, in particular, were interested in information on the implementation of state defense orders and the development of the latest aviation systems for detecting unmanned aerial vehicles used during the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine,” the report notes.

In addition, allegedly carrying out an assignment from a representative of the Russian General Staff, “the agent tried to purchase a Ukrainian-made unmanned aerial vehicle with the aim of further transferring it to the aggressor country for aerial reconnaissance.”

The SBU claims that the spy communicated with the “curators” during trips to the territory of the Russian Federation and through email correspondence. Subsequently, he allegedly planned to travel to Russia and obtain Russian citizenship.

“It has also been established that, with the assistance of a Russian intelligence officer, a Ukrainian citizen has already received a residence permit in Russia and has reissued a military pension to receive it on Russian territory. SBU officers detained a spy in Kyiv at his workplace. During searches at the places of work and residence of the person involved in the case, law enforcement officers seized materials confirming his illegal activities,” the SBU stated.
