This is the forecast announced by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
It was initially assumed that this figure could be about 850 thousand over two years.
“About 700 thousand people will seek protection in Europe in 2015. It is possible that their number will increase in 2016, but for now the forecast is based on the figures for 2015,” the department said in a statement.
In 2015 alone, the number of dead and missing in the Mediterranean reached 3 thousand. About 55% of the total number of refugees are Syrians, followed by citizens of Afghanistan and Eritrea.
According to the head of UNHCR, Antonio Gutierrez, the number of “economic” refugees will only grow in the coming years, despite the fact that “the world is not prepared for this.” In his opinion, there is not enough humanitarian assistance for refugees, and the international community must take responsibility for this.
It was previously reported that an emergency EU summit with the participation of heads of member states to discuss the refugee crisis was held on September 23.
The main issue at the emergency EU summit was the proportional distribution of 120 thousand migrants.
