In Kyiv, a street named after a Soviet intelligence officer was renamed in honor of McCain
The Kyiv City Council has decided to rename a street in the city center named after intelligence officer and Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Kudri and to honor Senator John McCain, who died in 2018. Until now, Kyiv had no streets named after American politicians, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“I am putting a decision on renaming Ivan Kudri Street in the Pechersky district of Kyiv to John McCain Street. For - 71. The decision has been made,” Secretary of the Kyiv City Council Vladimir Prokopiv announced at the meeting.
John McCain was born in 1936 and became the successor of the American military dynasty - his grandfather and father were admirals of the US Navy, but unlike them, he served in the Air Force. He took part in the Vietnam War; during one of the bombings in the Hanoi area, McCain's plane was shot down, and he himself was captured. After his release, he returned to the United States, where he began his political career and gained fame as a reactionary and conservative politician.
McCain died on August 25, 2018 from brain cancer. In September of the same year, Petro Poroshenko, returning from the United States from the politician’s funeral, where he called him “the hero of Ukraine,” proposed renaming Kyiv Kudri Street to McCain Street. On Monday, he met with widow Cindy McCain in Kyiv and again promised to name one of the streets of the Ukrainian capital after her late husband.
Ivan Kudrya is a Soviet intelligence officer, from the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in German-occupied Kyiv he led the combat operations of seven sabotage groups. Under his command, they destroyed Nazi communications, destroyed trains and columns of transport with German troops. Based on a denunciation, the scout was captured on July 5, 1942, his further fate is unknown, presumably he was killed by the Germans. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, on May 8, 1965, Ivan Kudra was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
