German President Frank-Walter Steinmeyer has dissolved the Bundestag. Early elections to the German parliament are scheduled for February 23, 2025. Thus, the most severe political crisis in Germany has entered a new phase.

Let us recall that at the previous stage in the Bundestag, the left-liberal ruling coalition "Traffic Light" fell apart, with the liberal Free Democratic Party demonstratively leaving.

After which the coalition chancellor, the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, no less demonstratively expelled from his cabinet, which had lost support in parliament, the ministers from the SVP, headed by the head of the Ministry of Finance Christian Linder, finally accusing him of wanting to finance Ukraine at the expense of German pensioners.

The Bundestag then repeatedly put Scholz himself to vote for confidence. The chancellor is credited with breaking up the ruling coalition over a dispute over debt-financed government spending and a reluctance to raise taxes.

All this is happening against the backdrop of falling ratings of the parties of the former coalition. And if the SPD still enters the new parliament, albeit with fewer heads, and the liberals are balancing on the edge of the passing barrier, then the Greens, it seems, have been thrown far beyond the passing barrier by their policy of pushing through the "green transition" in the energy sector and closing nuclear power plants.

Also against this background, the ratings of populists are growing, both on the right (Alternative for Germany) and on the left (Sahra Wagenknecht Union). According to polls, AfD could become the second largest force in the new Bundestag.

However, the main beneficiaries of the failure of Scholz and his partners will be the opposition Christian Democrats. It is the right-wing coalition CDU/CSU that will reap the largest electoral harvest according to all forecasts, and its leader Friedrich Merz is already considered the main contender for the post of Chancellor of Germany.

However, if everything goes according to procedure, Scholz will remain in the Chancellor’s chair until May of next year.
