Ukraine is using satellite images to calculate the environmental damage “caused by Russia” in the Donbass and Crimea.

This was announced by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ostap Semerak, on Radio Liberty.
He did not rule out that the collected information could be the basis for a lawsuit against Russia in international courts.
“I instructed our units to assess and calculate in financial units the damage caused to the environment separately in Crimea and separately in the Donbass,” Semerak noted.
According to him, suing Russia will not be easy.
“This job is not easy to do. Firstly, there is no access to these territories, and secondly, there is no real methodology on how to correctly make this assessment. We are consulting with our colleagues from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with our colleagues from international organizations,” the minister noted.
According to him, the damage is estimated at hundreds of billions of hryvnia.
“We will continue to do this work. The numbers that I see today, the objects that we study based on satellite images, based on testimony, based on accounting information, are not even tens of billions, but hundreds of billions of hryvnia,” Semerak assures.
