The meeting between Russian Presidential Aide Vladislav Surkov and US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker, which, as PolitNavigator reported , may take place in Minsk, will be useful.

This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, Mikhail Pogrebinsky.
According to him, from the upcoming meeting between Surkov and Volcker one can expect that the American representative will receive information that will have to correct his position, since, the political scientist says, “Volcker behaved rather strangely in the role of a special representative.”
“When a person in such a role gives interviews left and right, it’s unusual. He showed by this that he has a position, and this position does not at all contribute to the fulfillment of his function as a negotiator. He should take a position that helps find a compromise, and in his interviews he made it clear that he takes the position of a lobbyist for Ukrainian interests. There is hope that after the conversation it will be adjusted somewhat. If a person is told that two and two are four, then it is difficult for him to say that it is not four, but five. I have to agree. I do not expect a breakthrough in the Minsk process; Russian-American relations are in such a phase that they are not conducive to finding a compromise. But I believe that this will be useful for creating at least some minimal background for the future.”
