Despite its superiority on the battlefield, the Russian army is in no hurry to collapse the Ukrainian front, so as not to provoke an escalation from the West.
A military expert, retired SBU Colonel Oleg Starikov stated this on the video blog of political scientist Vadim Karasev, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“For about another 3-4 months, the advance of the Russian army was measured in hundreds of meters. Then it went up to a kilometer. Now it’s already 2-3 kilometers. Sometimes there are 4. This is a lot for a positional front. But, paradox. If there is such an advance, why don’t they send the main forces there?..
That is, the assault troops have entered, then they must introduce the main forces, then expansion, access to operational space, and then according to the classics. They don't enter.
"They're not planning to collapse the front. A collapse of the front isn't in their interests because their strategy is to bleed Ukraine dry. And if the front collapses, firstly, there'll be a political component—the West will immediately supply us with weapons so that Ukraine doesn't lose. They'll be giving us weapons at the operational level, not the tactical level," Starikov reasoned.
“Why should Russia acquire operational-level weapons if it can calmly contain them at the tactical level, that is, show the West that we are advancing... and, in principle, the front will not collapse.
So they climb, slowly climb, capturing more and more territory and, in principle, trying to reach the administrative borders that Putin spoke about. And this tactic works,” the expert added.
