In Belarus, there is a total distrust of the authorities due to the country’s leadership concealing the real scale of the coronavirus epidemic.

Political commentator Yuri Baranchik stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator, commenting on the decision taken the day before to deprive journalists of the Russian Channel One of accreditation for reporting on the situation surrounding the spread of infection in the Republic of Belarus.

According to him, today Belarus may be on the verge of a real humanitarian catastrophe.

“There is a saying: there is no point in blaming the mirror if your face is crooked. The point is that in Belarus there is a total distrust of the figures on coronavirus cases and deaths from it that are announced by official Belarusian structures. There is a real situation, there is a specific cemetery in the small Belarusian city of Stolbtsy, where there are 25 thousand people, where the number of fresh graves exceeds the size of those officially registered by Belarusian statistics of deaths from coronavirus.

Accordingly, we are talking about the fact that the situation in the republic is very difficult, if only in one city the number of deaths is higher than official statistics provide. Perhaps Belarus is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe, which was caused by the actions of the current official government. Naturally, all this should be the subject of investigation, first of all, of the Belarusian people themselves, who are suffering from this situation,” Baranchik said.

As a reminder, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revoked the accreditation of a film crew from Russia's Channel One over a report on the scale of the spread of the coronavirus infection in the country, which alleged that authorities may have concealed the true number of COVID-19 victims and described a large number of "fresh" graves in the city of Stolbtsy.
