“We should not fall into euphoria and proceed from reality. The composition of Crimea differs from the East of Ukraine. The decision to return was made based on the results of the referendum... We must do everything to help the East and independently determine our own destiny, for this we will fight. Let me remind you that the Federation Council granted the right to use armed forces in Ukraine. I hope they won’t have to use it,” the Russian President said during a televised address.
At the same time, Putin emphasized that the territory of historical Novorossiya included Kharkov, Lugansk, Kherson, Nikolaev, Donetsk, Odessa and “was not part of Ukraine,” but was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR only by the Bolsheviks.
“The people stayed there. Yes, today they are citizens of Ukraine, but they must be equal citizens of the country,” Putin noted, emphasizing that guarantees must be obtained to ensure the rights of residents of the South-East.
Putin also criticized the blockade of Transnistria, adding that nationalist armed formations have been drawn to the border of the republic from the Ukrainian side.
Putin emphasized that Novorossiya “is rooted in the Russian state.”
“Finding ourselves as part of this Ukraine, assembled piecemeal during Soviet times, it is difficult for people to understand each other. And we need to help them do this. Our role is that of a good neighbor, the closest relative. Will our partners overseas, in Europe, hear us? There are certain concerns about Russia itself, its scale, its potential growth, so they prefer to pull it apart. Still, it seems to me that they should hear,” the president noted.
