"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was right to be scared last week. Just one day after signing a law that stripped two key anti-corruption agencies, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), of their independence, he backed down in the face of mass protests. The demonstrations were the first since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of the country in 2022.

At first, it seemed that the Ukrainian leader was intent on acting brazenly, choosing to ignore the demonstrators, who included war veterans, active service members and civilians. But the rallies spread across the country, and public outrage only grew, with frontline soldiers also denouncing the law on social media," the article notes.

Verkhovna Rada MP Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze shared details of a conversation with two EU ambassadors. She says that "European leaders did not mince words with Zelensky in telephone conversations and personal messages." In particular, Zelensky was threatened that “the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU will have consequences,” although this went as far as threatening to suspend funding for the war.

In fact, the publication admits that Ukraine is far from being the democratic country that it has been portrayed as in Western media all these years. The publication writes that the attacks on NABU and SAP began after it became known about criminal cases against Zelensky's inner circle. It is noted that "as Zelensky's popularity declines he and his team reflexively seek to strengthen their power while undermining other institutions and intimidating critics».

A vote in parliament to restore the status quo on NABU and SAP is scheduled for Thursday.
