According to him, he himself was a Russian-speaking native of the Odessa region until he got a job in Kyiv.
“I graduated from a Russian school in the Odessa region and began to speak Ukrainian when Ivan Mikhailovich Dzyuba signed a contract for me, and it was written: “Exclusively in Ukrainian.” I started learning Ukrainian when I became rector - in 93.
When Vyacheslav Maksymovych ( Chornovol ) invited me to join the People's Movement, I said, "You see, my children come from all political parties, movements, and so on. I can't be the rector of just one party. I'll be nonpartisan, but I'll support you ideologically and spiritually. The university, I promise you, will be national in form, content, and spirit. Today, we have many children from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions—by the second year, they all speak Ukrainian," Poplavsky boasted.
