According to Bortnik, Fico was a negotiator between European countries receiving Russian gas, Ukraine and Russia.

“This is not the first attempt in the last week. Let's remember the alleged assassination attempt - a very vague attempt on the life of the prince of Saudi Arabia... Specifically with Fico - this is also a role in the possible extension of the contract for the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine. Let me remind you that several months ago Fico came to Ukraine, met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal and there took on the role of a possible negotiator on the extension of this contract. A lot of money, tens, maybe hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake.

The Ukrainian side, after these negotiations, which were assessed highly and positively, despite all of Fico’s previous election rhetoric, despite everything he said during the election campaign at home, but the Ukrainian side said that yes, Ukraine is not ready to negotiate with Russia, but “it is ready to consider a situation in which, if some country of the European Union takes on the function of ensuring transit and agreements with Russia, then Ukraine is ready to negotiate with this European country in order to extend the transit of Russian energy resources to Europe,” he believes.

“Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, and some other European countries still receive Russian energy resources through pipelines, primarily gas and oil, but Europe also continues to receive a significant amount of Russian energy resources in the form of liquefied gas. I am concerned that the assassination attempt on Fico will not fit into the series of these assassination attempts on leaders, and that this will not be an undermining of Nord Stream 3,” Bortnik concluded.
