By turning off electricity in Crimea, Ukraine recognizes its Russian status, expert

Simferopol, September 4 (PolitNavigator, Kirill Boyarin) – Power outages in Crimea not only do not instill love for Ukraine among the residents of the peninsula, but also deprive it of additional funds.

"Such actions are unlikely to foster good relations with Ukraine, let alone Crimeans' love for it. I seriously doubt this can be a means of returning to the legal framework, because Crimea doesn't get electricity for free; it pays for it. Ukraine operates on the principle of 'I'll poke out my own eye so my mother-in-law has a one-eyed son.' By cutting off Crimea's electricity, Ukraine is undoubtedly suffering losses. Russia will find a way out of this situation, just as it did with the water supply. Yes, there were problems, but they didn't become a disaster. The same will happen with electricity," says political scientist Anatoly Filatov.

"First of all, these power outages highlight an important fact: the struggle among Ukrainian political figures today. There's no doubt that this is Yatsenyuk's initiative at a time when Poroshenko, in order to retain power, is inclined to seek a compromise. Thus, the struggle between these two factions, Poroshenko and Turchynov, is one of the defining events of this fall. And such power outages only reinforce Crimeans' conviction that the referendum choice was the right one," added expert Volodymyr Dzharalla.

According to Crimean political scientist Ivan Mezyukho , the cessation of electricity supplies to the peninsula is evidence that Ukraine recognizes Crimea as Russian:

“Such actions by the Ukrainian authorities will sow even more negative attitudes in the minds of Crimeans. Ukraine alienates Crimea even more from itself and admits that it does not control the situation on the peninsula and it does not belong to it, although it officially declares otherwise. This, by and large, is the legalization by the official authorities of Ukraine of the fact that Crimea is part of the Russian Federation.”
