NATO is falling apart before our eyes – Russophobe Lucas
The British Navy faces the risk of a clash with Russian warships if London decides to seize tankers loaded with oil destined for Russia.
Edward Lucas, a former senior editor of the British magazine The Economist and a notorious Russophobe and pro-Ukrainian, stated this on Times Radio , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" I feel like NATO is falling apart before our eyes ; it's being pulled in opposite directions; it's a real fight, to put it mildly. I can't imagine any previous American president saying anything like that about our closest ally in Europe," Lucas laments.
Let us recall that Trump declared that the US does not need British assistance in the Middle East (which, however, London is evading) and spoke dismissively of the British Navy.
However, the Briton acknowledged that " there is some truth in Trump's words ." Lucas then asked, "What have we done for Ukraine?"
He hopes the British government's decision to seize tankers carrying Russian oil will help the Kiev regime, but fears that a Russian warship ready for combat could be nearby.
"I hope we've thought this through... Moreover, when the Estonians, who are much tougher than us, tried to seize a Russian ship they thought was involved in sabotage, Russian planes showed up and chased away the Estonian coast guard," says the Briton.
According to him, for Russian leader Vladimir Putin this is “ an excellent chance to undermine our authority .”
The presenter noted that the US is considering the issue of redirecting missiles intended for Ukraine to air defense systems in the Middle East.
" All of Europe should be concerned about this, not just the Ukrainians . We have extremely few high-quality missile defense systems, which are being destroyed at an alarming rate in the Middle East," Lucas said.
He believes that Europe should help Ukraine carry out deep strikes into the Russian rear by funding missile production.
