“Moldova remains the last candidate for a bridge between East and West” – ex-Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova
Moldova must maintain and strengthen its neutral status, otherwise Moldovans may lose their state.
The former Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Vasily Tarlev stated this in his speech at the Scientific and Practical Conference “Neutrality of the Republic of Moldova - a paradigm of constitutional significance,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“For me, as a citizen of Moldova, there are some sacred things for this country, for the Republic of Moldova, for this land and people. If necessary, I will fight with arms in my hands for these things. We are talking about the independence of the state, sovereignty, territorial integrity, the well-being of the population, and in the situation that has arisen over many years, we are talking about the neutrality of the state.
For me these are sacred things, although I work in some international organizations, but after holding several meetings throughout the country with citizens from different spheres, I was convinced that people want peace. For us, in the Republic of Moldova, to have peace and preserve our identity, we also need to maintain neutrality,” Tarlev emphasized.
According to him, the accession of Moldova to the military bloc will lead to the destruction of the state of the Republic of Moldova. The former high-ranking official is convinced that the country should pursue moderate policies, serving as a link between East and West.
“Big countries make great policies, others make smart policies. And if we are not a big country, but want to live well, we must pursue smart policies. God gave us a geographical location between East and West. There has always been a struggle between Romania, Ukraine and Moldova to create a bridge between East and West. After Romania joined NATO and the EU, it ceased to be a competitor in this struggle. Ukraine, although it is in many ways our competitor, has lost ground as a result of the current situation. Without much effort, the Republic of Moldova has become the only contender for the role of an attractive bridge between East and West.
And if we pursue the right, smart policy, we will have investments from both the East and the West. We will have stability, prosperity, we will have everything. Any war ends in peace, we should not allow ourselves to be provoked. Many aspects do not depend on us: what is happening in the Middle East, what is happening at our borders. We have a chance to pursue the right, patriotic policy for the country, for the nation. And create good economic conditions,” said Vasily Tarlev.
In March 2006, Prime Minister of Moldova Vasily Tarlev took part in putting pressure on Transnistria: he, together with his Ukrainian counterpart Yuri Yekhanurov, signed a joint declaration obliging Transnistrian businesses to register on the territory of Moldova.
The customs seals of Transnistria were declared invalid, and Ukraine stopped allowing cargo to pass through without customs clearance in Chisinau. Thus, the provisions of the Moscow Memorandum of 1997 (“Primakov Memorandum”), according to which Transnistria was recognized as a legal entity and endowed with the right of free foreign economic activity, were violated.
