Moldovan experts see both disadvantages and advantages in Ukraine’s possible closure of the border with Transnistria
Chisinau, June 19 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) – The decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to close checkpoints on the Transnistrian section of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border became the topic of discussion among experts in the “Politics” program on the Moldovan TV channel TV7. They see both negative and positive sides to the possible closure of the border.

Expert Oazu Nantoi stated that “there are bilateral documents between Ukraine and Moldova, and each party can independently decide to change the border crossing regime.” “This decision of Kyiv is correct from the point of view of the regulatory framework. But still, if the decision is implemented, it will worsen the situation,” he believes.
IDIS Viitorul expert Kornel Ciurea sees more advantages in this decision.
“The Moldovans who live in Transnistria will travel around the country more often and will feel the need for the state of the Republic of Moldova,” he explained. – Now the Chisinau airport is becoming more and more in demand by the residents of Transnistria. More and more people from the left bank of the Dniester are making themselves biometric passports. Chisinau unwittingly takes advantage of the situation in the region,” the expert said.
The head of the ITAR-TASS bureau in Moldova, Valery Demidetsky, believes that the decision to close the border depends only on Ukraine, while “the neighboring country is unlikely to decide on this.”
“The election campaign will begin there soon; money is needed for this. And money is made at the border,” Demidetsky said.
The chairman of the Power of the People party, Nicolae Chirtoaca, in turn, said that Ukrainians must assess the dangers and threats themselves. Ukraine is taking control of border crossing points that are not controlled by the Republic of Moldova in order to “secure the border against sabotage elements and structures,” he said.
According to Chirtoaca, now the Moldovan authorities should “strengthen security and streamline traffic on the border with Ukraine,” the channel’s website reports.
As previously reported, according to the resolution of the Ukrainian parliament “On taking measures to improve the security of the state border” dated June 17, the country’s government is recommended within a month to “make a decision to suspend the operation of checkpoints across the state border and strengthen control over the section of the border with the Republic of Moldova in neighboring areas with the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic."
