The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the world community, including international non-governmental organizations, to pay attention to the unfavorable state of affairs in the human rights sphere.

This was stated today by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Economic Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
“October marked 25 years since the creation of the shameful institution of non-citizenship, unprecedented in modern Europe, in independent and democratic Latvia. The ethnocratic experiment that began a quarter of a century ago turned hundreds of thousands of people into outcasts in the state in which they were born and live,” Zakharova said.
According to her, today more than 11% of the population (about 250 thousand residents) are completely deprived of a number of fundamental political rights, including electoral and socio-economic rights. In neighboring Estonia, more than 80 thousand people live in the humiliating status of non-citizens.
“We call on the international community to finally move this issue forward, encouraging official Riga and Tallinn to fulfill their international obligations and take specific measures to completely eradicate mass statelessness,” Zakharova said.
