Mariupol residents mocked the new symbols imposed on the city
The former Lenin Square in Mariupol, renamed Freedom Square in 2015, underwent reconstruction and decommunization.
This was reported by the local resource 0629, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.

So, instead of the monument to Lenin and communist symbols demolished in 2014, on the initiative of the militants of the Azov national regiment, who participated in the capture of the city, a monument was erected in the square in honor of the Kiev prince Svyatoslav, the sculpture “Confrontation”, which is a metal ball, riddled with rectangles.

A mourning memorial also appeared with a bell in honor of the militants who died during the capture of the city and a bronze stele with oak leaves along which water should flow as a symbol of shed tears.
“We don’t have time to admire this monument yet. The fact is that over the weekend the monument was vandalized and some of the oak leaves were torn off. Now workers are working on their restoration,” the message says.

25 white doves were also installed above the square, which symbolize the number of regions of Ukraine that were part of it before the coup d’etat, and the so-called “Peace Bell,” from which the “tongue” was immediately removed because local residents showed active interest in it and they called too often.

“Last weekend everyone rang the bronze bell. Therefore, it was now decided to remove the bell tongue. It will only be hung for special events and will ring in capable hands. The silent bell does not attract much attention from the townspeople, so the area around it is empty,” the news notes.

In addition, the square begins and ends with murals on the walls of houses dedicated to the theme of war and peace.
