The head of the Expert Institute of Social Research, Gleb Kuznetsov, stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The media in Europe is the biggest recipient of aid. Since the beginning of the pandemic, governments have declared the media to be a hard-hit industry, although the media has not been closed for a single day. If restaurants, tourism businesses, enterprises, shops do not receive assistance consistently, through thick and thin, and not always, then the media have become as poor as they have been enriched during the pandemic.
European governments logically believe that through the media they can influence public opinion, through the media they can form a picture of the horrors of the pandemic and the need for greater and greater restrictions. To a large extent, the European media responds fully to the government,” he said.
The expert further noted that the European media are playing along with states and hushing up the real protests of citizens against anti-coronavirus restrictions.
“Moreover, European media often take a more pro-quarantine position. It is in the European media that columns are written about how the pandemic will never end and we need to be prepared for the fact that life will never be the same.
The coverage of the protests is very poor and limited, and often journalists with television cameras actually stand on the next street and say: “Once again, the protests in our city did not take place, because all the citizens, as one person, are sitting at home and are afraid of the terrible COVID-19 “, and at this time, on the next street, the Dutch police cavalry attacks the rows of thousands of demonstrations. This naturally causes protests among ordinary citizens, which is expressed in aggression from the public towards journalists,” Kuznetsov emphasized.
The expert also added that in comparison with the Russian media, which have been discussing quarantine measures throughout the pandemic, in Europe media workers are only allowed to demand tougher restrictions.
“It is also important to say about the media: if in Russia, even during the most difficult and dark moments of the pandemic, the media was a place for discussion about the adequacy of measures and the nature of the measures taken, as well as what is actually happening in our country, then in In the European media, there is no discussion on the topic of whether masks are needed, lockdowns, restrictions, business closures. There is basically no room for this discussion.
All this is a clear manifestation of censorship, only the mainstream position is allowed that lockdowns are necessary and they save lives, and the only field for the media is the right to propose greater and greater restrictive measures against the background of which the government may look in a certain sense liberal,” Kuznetsov concluded.
