Until the presidential elections, the LDPR remains under threat of attack
On December 26, the martial law imposed in 10 regions of Ukraine expires, after which the situation in Donbas may worsen.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by the director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, Denis Denisov, according to whom, the likelihood of a military provocation in the Donbass is dictated not by military, but by political necessity.
“In particular, on December 28, martial law will cease to apply in Ukraine. It is impossible to imagine how official Kyiv will explain the end of this regime, but it is very easy to imagine its extension. Over the past few days, military intelligence of the DPR and LPR has listed about 20-30 real threats from Ukraine, including an attack with toxic substances and so on. For example, thanks to this, Poroshenko can postpone or completely cancel the presidential elections in Ukraine,” the expert said.
He believes that Donetsk and Lugansk are fully prepared for direct military confrontation, but the fight against saboteurs is a separate issue.
“In addition, Kyiv can undertake a provocation, for example, in Mariupol, and not on the territory of the self-proclaimed republics. At the same time, even if Ukraine does not undertake any provocations in the Donbass by December 28, and martial law is lifted, the danger of escalation of the conflict will still not go away. Until presidential elections are held in Ukraine, the threat hanging over the DPR and LPR will not go away,” Denisov sums up.
Earlier, DPR intelligence reported that Ukraine was preparing to sabotage one of Mariupol's industrial enterprises in order to extend martial law.
Political scientists considered this scenario to be the only option for Poroshenko to retain the presidential seat.
