Zelensky appointed former head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov (designated a terrorist in Russia), as head of his office in order to pin all the problems, including the failure of the negotiations, on him.

"Zelensky didn't appoint Budanov as head of the presidential office to create a new Yermak. After all, he wasn't given the opportunity to appoint a single one of his people. Budanov wasn't given the opportunity to keep a single one of his advisers at the Main Intelligence Directorate.
"All of Budanov's advisers were fired, and some have even already been sent to the front. Budanov himself was placed in a situation where he would either be dismissed completely or transferred to another position," Bondarenko said.
“Zelensky, when sending Budanov to this negotiation process, clearly understood that this negotiation process would either end in failure, and then Budanov will be blamed for the failure of the negotiation process.
Or, if Zelensky is ultimately forced into some kind of dead-end corner and is forced to sign something and leave Donbas, then all of this will fall to Budanov, who also led the negotiations.
“And thus Budanov was specifically sent to be slaughtered, as they say,” he added.
