Everyone was invited to the cleanup event. From the bus station located next to the railway station, Mother Superior Mikhail personally drove the arriving volunteers by car. Carrying scrap metal, storing firewood, cleaning and beautifying the area - there was something for everyone.

The monastery is located near the Donetsk airport and was heavily damaged during the fighting. The cemetery adjacent to the monastery has not yet been completely cleared of mines, but you can already walk freely around the territory of the monastery. Nevertheless, the “souvenirs” left over from the war, although harmless, are literally lying underfoot here.

The war here is also reminiscent of the short bursts of an automatic cannon coming from time to time from the direction of Sand and the sounds of small arms fire. According to the map, the front line is about three kilometers from here.

“We are preparing for the patronal feast (on Tuesday of Holy Week, Orthodox Christians celebrate the discovery of the prototype of the Iveron Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary - author), says Mother Mikhail. “And in general, order needs to be restored.”

Indeed, there is still a lot of work to be done here: the monastery buildings have been thoroughly damaged, and the cemetery has also been badly damaged. When asked “how did you survive all this,” mother only smiles: “It’s normal.” And although the worst is over for the monastery, no one is still spending the night here: the front is close.
