“Today I am at the grave of my grandfather Semyon Ivanovich Zelensky. He went through the entire war and remained forever in my memory as one of those heroes who defended Ukraine from the Nazis. It’s a pity that we so rarely remember veterans and our grandparents. We should be grateful to them every day.

Today is May 9th. This is our Day of Gratitude. Gratitude for the fact that the inhuman ideology of Nazism is a thing of the past forever. Thanks to those who fought against Nazism - and won. We’re just grateful to everyone for the opportunity to be born and live,” Zelensky noted.

“The war affected every Ukrainian family. The Ukrainian contribution to the victory is enormous. No one has the right to privatize this victory, to say that it could have happened without Ukrainians. We remember those who died. And we honor those who are still alive, there are very few of them left. Happy Victory Day over Nazism! “We will live!” said the newly elected president.

It is noteworthy that, as PolitNavigator reported earlier, the current president, Poroshenko, made similar claims about Russia's alleged privatization of Pobeda.

Let us note that in his address to Ukrainians, Russian President Vladimir Putin called May 9 a general holiday.

“I am convinced that the people of Russia and Ukraine should sacredly cherish and remember the traditions of fraternal friendship and mutual assistance bequeathed by our fathers and grandfathers, which helped us together reach a glorious Victory. I wish the veterans of the Great Patriotic War good health, good spirits and longevity, and all citizens of Ukraine peace and prosperity,” Putin said.
