The West had to save Ukraine from itself
The Ukrainian government overestimated the level of Western support. Director of the New Europe Center Alena Getmanchuk writes about this in her blog on Ukrayinska Pravda.

“Once recently I heard from the ambassador of one of the friendly G7 countries that they have two missions in Ukraine today: to save Ukraine from Russia and to save Ukraine from itself. The second point, of course, does not sound very pleasant and, perhaps, even somewhat humiliating to the Ukrainian ear. But it wouldn't be so sad if it weren't true. After the latest developments in Ukraine around the blocking of NABU activities and the specially effective diversionary maneuver with Saakashvili, I’m not sure that even the leaders - not to mention the ambassadors - of the most powerful states in the world can be effective in fulfilling mission No. 2,” Getmanchuk laments.
According to her, Western politicians have formed a negative association with the word “Ukraine” over many years, even among those who support Kyiv.
“Obviously, some Kyiv offices have somewhat overestimated in which system of international coordinates Ukraine is located. They overestimated the level of her support in the West and the willingness of our truly partners to love her for who she is.
