Each Donetsk citizen could show that he had made his choice: to do this, he just needed to light a candle and place it at his window, or, while on the road, stop for a minute and honk the car horn in memory of each dead. This is exactly what many residents of both Donetsk and Russian cities did.

Those who came to Lenin Square laid out the name of their republic, the DPR, from lighted candles.
The general mood of those gathered at these moments was expressed by Denis Pushilin, who was present at this action: “We have gathered here to express our grief for those of our fellow citizens who are no longer with us, for those residents of Donbass who gave their lives for our freedom. Today we honor the memory of everyone, not only the militias who took up arms to defend our land, but also the civilians who actually became victims of this punitive operation. Our unique action was supported today in many cities of Russia, there they also lit candles and placed them in the windows in honor of the people who are dear to us and whom we have no right to forget, and will not forget. The date was not chosen by chance: that part of the former Ukraine is holding its own elections, and we are voting for our freedom and for our future in a unique way. For our choice."
