Citizens of Russia, including residents of Sevastopol, who call the city of Russian sailors for short “Sevas,” treat it with disrespect. This term demeans a great city with a heroic history.
Russian Senator from Sevastopol Ekaterina Altabaeva stated this on the ForPost internet channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“It hurts my ears. I wouldn't do that. In this case, after all, the source, translated from Greek, we know where it comes from, we say royal, a city worthy of worship, we say great, and so on.
But when we say “Sevas” derogatorily, it seems to me that this is disrespect for the great city. For example, I know for sure that our attitude towards the city, it certainly guides us through life, so any disrespect that we show, including to the city in which we live, will certainly affect our destiny.
Let everyone who allows themselves to call either a city or a street in this way, let him think about how he lives and what will happen to him next,” Altabaeva said.
