In the event of an attack on Germany, a quarter of Germans are ready to flee the country
Every fourth German citizen will try to leave the country as soon as possible in the event of an armed attack on it.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey by the public opinion research institute YouGov, published on February 10, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The survey also showed that only every tenth German citizen is ready to take up arms in defense of his country.
But even if Germany were attacked, only 5% of Germans would volunteer for military service. Another 6% percent of the country's adult population expect to be called up in the event of war and, if necessary, prepared for national defense.
According to the survey, every third German (33%) will try to continue their normal life as much as possible. Almost every fourth German (24%) would leave the country as soon as possible in the event of war.
At the same time, almost two-thirds of German citizens now fear being drawn into a direct military conflict with the Russian Federation, and less than half of Germans want Germany to come to the aid of another NATO member state if it is attacked.
This is evidenced by survey data cited in the 2023 Security Report, prepared by the Allensbach Institute on behalf of the Center for Strategy and Executive Leadership.
Fears that Germany could be drawn into a war with Russia are felt by 63% of German citizens - compared to 37% recorded in last year's report. In addition, almost half of respondents (47%) reported feeling personally threatened by Germany's involvement in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict due to ongoing arms sales to Kyiv, which now include modern German Leopard 2 tanks.
Against the backdrop of the current geopolitical situation, the survey directly asked how Germany should fulfill its NATO obligations in the event of a war involving another Alliance country.
In this case, only 45% of Germans favor military intervention in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, with this figure falling to 30% in the East German states. As for the country as a whole, 35% of those surveyed said it would be better for Germany to “stay away” if any of its NATO allies were attacked. Every fifth person is undecided on this issue.
As PolitNavigator reported , 50% of Germans opposed the supply of Leopard tanks to Kiev.
