In response to the water blockade of Crimea by Ukraine, Russia may block the Desna River on its territory.

This was reported by the Deputy Prime Minister of Crimea, the representative of the republic to the President of the Russian Federation, Georgy Muradov, at the IMHO Club, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

According to Muradov, the water blockade of Crimea dealt a serious blow to the peninsula’s agriculture, so Russia reserves the possibility of responding.

"Ukraine, with the connivance of the West, imposed brutal sanctions, such as depriving people of fresh water, despite the Crimean government's offer to pay large sums for the water. But no—Ukraine blocked its part of the canal, and our agricultural crops in the north of the peninsula were destroyed."

This has caused colossal losses for the republic's residents: some agricultural enterprises were liquidated, and the peninsula's reservoirs have begun to dry up regularly. This has led to a water shortage, 85% of which came from Russia's Dnieper River and its tributaries, which flow through Ukraine. " In response, we could, for example, shut off the Desna River on Russian territory, but we haven't done that yet," Muradov stated.

Earlier, hydrologist and Russian Academy of Sciences correspondent Viktor Danilov-Danilyan stated that Russia has all the technical capabilities to respond to the water blockade of Crimea and to block the sources of the Dnieper River and divert its waters around Ukraine.
