“Technologists are confident that 2 years will be enough for 80% of Ukrainians to become accustomed to celebrating the anniversary of the end of World War II in a new way. Without festive fireworks and pompous parades. With poppies and near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, leaving in the past myths and traditions designed to serve big politics instead of respecting memory,” says the story of Poroshenko’s channel.
Let us recall that, according to the Kyiv press, Poroshenko’s attempt to destroy the tradition of celebrating May 9 has so far been met with quiet sabotage on the ground.
“Indeed, our leaders allegedly proposed to do this not on May 9, but on May 8, when Germany signed the surrender. Even the Verkhovna Rada held a solemn meeting. However, it seems that this meeting was held for the EU countries. And for the people, as before, the “victory over the Nazi invaders” was celebrated on May 9. The television played typical Soviet films about the war and the Germans. And local authorities gave instructions to organize various celebrations on this day. The Ukrainian authorities still don’t know what to do with the Soviet myth of May 9th. On the one hand, on the 8th we, as it were, together with civilized Europe, celebrate the day of the end of the Second World War, and the next day we bravuraly celebrate “Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War” with going to “sacred” “places of glory”, distributing “soldier’s porridge” “,” “One hundred grams of People’s Commissars,” etc.,” the Kiev newspaper “Den” was indignant.
