Ukraine needs to prepare for a direct military attack from the Russian army
This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv online publication “Apostrophe” by former NATO Deputy Secretary General and ex-US Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow, according to whom Ukraine is a “potential hot spot.”
“It is obvious that Russia will try to use all its tools to interfere in the Ukrainian presidential and parliamentary elections. At the very least, to sow confusion and chaos. And, as a maximum, bring to power flexible leaders who may be ready to accept Russia’s dictates. I don't think it's possible, but they may think it can be achieved. This means that Ukraine could expect an escalation of violence, as it did at the end of last year,” Vershbow warned.
He also does not rule out a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine.
“I think a direct collision is possible. Although this may not be very likely, the Russians can achieve many of their goals through more complex forms of aggression: cyber attacks, disinformation, inciting separatism, corruption and other means of creating instability in Ukraine. However, we must be prepared for a new direct military attack – either again in the Sea of Azov, or to seize territories along the coast of the Sea of Azov,” Vershbow believes.
