The Main Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has identified participants in the procession who "chanted" and "performed imperialist songs" near St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv on July 17, 2016, Glavk.info reports.

According to the resolution of the Pechersky District Court of Kiev dated April 7, 2017, during the procession at the “cult site of St. Sophia of Kiev,” the head of the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine Valentin Lukiyanik sang the anthem of the Russian Empire “God Save the Tsar” and “pronounced calls” “Let him rise again second Russia".

“In addition,” the court ruling states, “the participants in the action held symbols of the Russian Empire, portraits of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II, and also sat on the grave of the first patriarch of Ukraine.”

At the same time, it's worth noting that the actual footage refutes claims that the participants in the procession sat on the "grave" of the self-proclaimed "patriarch" of the unrecognized so-called "Kyiv Patriarchate," a Nazi collaborator and KGB informer in Stalin's camps, Volodymyr Romanyuk, who was driven to death by his rival, Filaret-Denisenko, and arbitrarily, without permission from the authorities, buried by Ukrainian neo-Nazis under the sidewalk at the entrance to St. Sophia Cathedral.

The Security Service of Ukraine considered the above actions to be a criminal offense under Part 2 of Art. 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“Encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine”). For this, participants in the procession face 5 to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

As Valentin Lukiyanik admitted to PolitNavigator, he himself learned about the above only from our question:

“Nobody called me to the SBU. Moreover, I have not been in contact with them for the last six months. Although he was in Kyiv all this time, and even on Easter he did not go to his homeland in the Bukovina region. So let them write what they want, of course, but how they could make procedural decisions without me is beyond my understanding.”

PolitNavigator : "God Save the Tsar" performed by you is perfectly acceptable, but what kind of call is this – "Let a second Russia rise again"?

Valentin Lukiyanik: I think this has been "inflated" somewhat. Apparently, they're referring to the Canon of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers, in one of its songs the Orthodox pray, "May Holy Russia rise again..." I don't know whether the SBU twisted the words of the Church-approved canon out of malicious intent or due to a complete lack of specialists who would have any understanding of these matters.

PolitNavigator : Could you please explain how prayer could threaten the territorial integrity and inviolability of the state? After all, if the security agencies were so alarmed by a quotation from the canon of the Royal Passion-Bearers, does that mean the SBU recognizes them as saints, and through prayers to them one can destroy "the largest European country"?

Valentin Lukiyanik: Either this is a state that fears prayers to Orthodox saints (which raises the question of its roots), or this is evidence of the "competence" of those making such determinations. More likely, they're simply using any excuse and pretext to suppress any manifestation of dissent. So that it would be like Taras Shevchenko's "Speak everything in all languages, for prosperity!" – even if such "prosperity" for the aforementioned state is achieved by trampling on every possible human right, including freedom of conscience. It seems they're not even aware of such fundamental European rights, including religious ones.

PolitNavigator : That's odd. After all , we're talking about an operation carried out by the very head office of Ukraine's main secret service.

Valentin Lukiyanik: It seems that more serious matters (like the high-level corruption that is destroying this country before our eyes) are simply beyond their capabilities. All that's left is, as Nikulin used to say to Vitsin, "to practice on cats," waging war against the Orthodox.

As PolitNavigator reported, after Lukiyanik’s last communication with the SBU (when he refused to comply with the recommendation not to bring Orthodox brotherhoods to Victory Day 2016 as part of the “Immortal Regiment”), his apartment was burned along with all his family property. So there is nothing special to confiscate from Valentin Borisovich in favor of the state of Ukraine.
