The European Union will not introduce extensive sanctions against Belarus because it is afraid that this will spur its integration with Russia.

This was stated by Tatyana Zosimenko, director of the economic diplomacy program of the Council on Foreign Policy "Ukrainian Prism", during a round table in Kyiv, reports a correspondent of "PolitNavigator".

According to the expert, Belarusian society perceives Western pressure on the government as pressure on itself and has a negative attitude towards sanctions.

“The population is very skeptical about European sanctions, believing that this is a kind of betrayal. Sanctions have been introduced to a certain extent against them, and in general, until additional pressure is introduced on the main partner, Lukashenko’s main ally - the Russian Federation, they will not have any influence at all.

If we are talking about the European Union’s readiness to increase the pace of external confrontation with Belarus, then in expert circles I see confidence that there will be no large-scale sanctions for some reasons. Firstly, so as not to harm the interests of our business, European, so as not to harm Belarusians, so as not to provoke Belarus to finally fall into the arms of the Russian Federation,” Zosimenko said.

Her words were confirmed by Kamil Klisinski, an analyst at the Center for Oriental Research from Poland.

“Of course, the European Union and not only Poland understand that sanctions from the West are not the main factor that will change the situation in Belarus. We must look realistically, that the most important thing is what the Belarusian people and the same participants in the demonstrations will say, which at the moment have died down a little, but perhaps will resume in the spring. The second important factor, whether we like it or not, is Russia - the main ally, but a very difficult ally of Belarus. Sanctions remain, if listed by importance, the third factor in influencing events in Belarus - whether we like it or not, this is actually the case,” the Pole became sad.

The Belarusian oppositionist, president of the Mises Research Center Yaroslav Romanchuk, also agreed with these conclusions.

“How sanctions are used in Belarus. I’m sitting in Belarus - this is a powerful investment in the propaganda of Belarus and Russia that all the problems in our country are just sanctions. “It’s not the mistakes they make, not the economic model, but the sanctions and, accordingly, the bastards Romanchuk and the opposition, and Ukraine, and the Poles want to destroy the Belarusian proletariat, so let’s go together with Russia unitedly, under the flag, to the next experiment,” – Romanchuk added.
