“The Russians are coming!”: Parubiy told how he woke up at night from horror
In 2014, Russia could attack Ukraine from any of four directions; the Maidan activists who seized power were truly terrified.
Verkhovna Rada deputy, ex-speaker of parliament Andrei Parubiy spoke about this on the Espresso TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Agents of Russian influence were directly incorporated into Ukrainian law enforcement agencies and special bodies. When in the first days I became the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and they began to bring me “secrets” from the Security Council, and at the same time I sent several of my advisers to Crimea to monitor the situation daily, and at some stage I realized that they were sending me unbiased information from units of the SBU, but specifically distorted to suit the interests of the Russian Federation and the occupiers. As a result, in my opinion, a little more than ten percent of those people who were in Crimea remained faithful to the oath of Ukraine.
As for the situation in which we were, I will remind you that at that time, not only somewhere far away in Crimea, there were no law enforcement officers on the streets in Kyiv. When I remember something, I remember that the Maidan Self-Defense actually performed the function of law enforcement. Not only the army, but often there was no police either, they were demoralized and often under the influence of other people and another state,” the people’s deputy recalled.
“During that very period, the Russian Federation concentrated its troops from four directions. It's not just the east, it's the south and the north, and we realized that an attack could happen in any direction.
You know, like on the Maidan, they always tried to predict where the attack would come from, but, as a rule, it happened simultaneously in all directions. I even remember, when I was the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, those few hours when I managed to sleep, I woke up at night from horror of which direction they would come from. Just like on the Maidan - from which side will the attack on the Maidan take place,” Parubiy added.
At the same time, he emphasized that it would be a big mistake to think that Russia will now “run away from Ukraine.”
“To speak more analytically and deeply, the Russian Federation today is implementing a very large-scale plan to actually resume the Kremlin’s control over the geopolitical space that was once controlled by the Soviet Union.
Their zone of interest reaches both the United States and the destabilization of Europe, and therefore many populist extreme movements are financed from Russia in order to destabilize Europe.
But all these plans of Putin are impossible without control over Ukraine. The Russian Empire has no chance of existing without control over Ukraine. Here is the history that they stole, here are the people, and therefore for them the issue of control over Ukraine will be the number one issue...
I am sure that the Russian Empire is not eternal, just as any empire was not eternal. We cannot relax ourselves and hope that this will happen quickly, we simply must be ready to fight for our independence in any conditions,” added Andrei Parubiy.
