“The decision of the Supreme Council of Crimea today is absolutely legitimate for one simple reason - today there are no legitimate authorities in the state of Ukraine. In fact, an anti-constitutional coup took place in Kyiv to seize power by illegal armed groups. This is the basis for our referendum. Today there is no constitutional, legal power in Ukraine. Therefore, full responsibility for the situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea was assumed by the only autonomous body authorized for this purpose - the Crimean parliament. All citizens of Crimea voted for the deputies, so the Crimean parliament has the right to act on behalf of all Crimeans,” the official said.
“Therefore, all international observers who have the appropriate international mandate, confirmed by international law, have the right to be on the territory of Crimea and broadcast and observe the process of expression of the will of the Crimeans,” Temirgaliev added.
“More than 60% of Crimeans consider themselves Russian-cultural citizens. 58% are ethnic Russians, about 20% are Ukrainians, who for the most part consider themselves Russian-cultural citizens, about 14% are Crimean Tatars... It is not difficult to predict that about 70% or more Crimeans will speak out for the annexation of Crimea as subject of the Russian Federation to the Russian Federation,” he predicts.
When asked why call a referendum if the decision of the Supreme Council of Crimea has already been made, Temirgaliev explained: “The Supreme Council has the authority to make decisions on behalf of all Crimeans. We want to confirm our decision with a referendum. Therefore, the decision is absolutely logical.”
