Vyacheslav Gubin (call sign “Father Kharkovsky”), commander of the DPR reconnaissance company, told a PolitNavigator correspondent the details of the defense of one of the settlements during active hostilities in 2015.

“An interesting incident happened to me in 2015. Dill occupied one waste heap. I won’t say where it is, knowledgeable people will understand. From this waste heap they quite calmly fire at the bus station and the surrounding neighborhoods, and whenever they feel like it, you know, it depends on their mood, whether they get high, get drunk, or Bandera whispers something to them from heaven, I don’t know.

In general, our head got tired of all this at one point and he set our command the task of punishing them a little, which was difficult to do, since the waste heap itself is a commanding height, and we cannot reach them with small arms.

The unit where I served had its own armored vehicles, there was a tank company. In general, a tank, a vehicle and an armored personnel carrier moved in that direction, and my guys and I acted as reconnaissance and cover.

We set out at night, everything was fine. During the day we carried out reconnaissance and outlined positions from which the equipment would operate. I repeat: the task was to “clog” their waste heap and work on their positions. Everything was marked out and coordinated with the local guys who were already holding positions there. We agreed that we would begin to act at nightfall. The tankman had already calculated everything, pointed the barrel at the desired angle, and at exactly 9 o’clock we began our operation.

And at that very moment, from the dill side they begin to clearly hit the place where the tank should work. Apparently there was an information leak somewhere. The tanker, not reaching this place about ten meters, opened fire on the waste heap, but everything turned out a little differently than we had planned, since it was already dark, and our aim turned out to be a little different. The command has already learned about this incident and is coming to deal with us.

And then they called our commander from the other side (he either had some agents or relatives there) and said: “Well, you are handsome, there is such panic, hysteria. They say that the Russians (Ukrop has no other culprits) used a special homing projectile.”

It turned out that our shell flew over the waste heap and hit their checkpoint directly in the embrasure. They are panicking and hysterical. But we didn’t complete our task.

The next day, the tank company commander and I sat down and began to think about how to proceed. The commander then suggested that I tell everyone that we start work in the same way at 9 pm, and we ourselves work at 7, still before daylight.

At fifteen minutes to seven, under the pretext of an expected artillery attack from the other side, I kicked the guys out and told them to quickly hide in the cellars and houses so that no one would show up on the streets. The residents were already learned and quickly fled. The tankers hit the gases, and half the ammunition is sent directly into this waste heap. The equipment then breaks away to leave.

Even before this, I had picked up some nice, big binoculars from the local guys; I couldn’t take them with me – I ran to give them back. So I was running along the station square, and on the other side, apparently, the guys woke up and started shooting right at it. I just managed to reach the boys who were sitting behind the concrete block.

I ran up and said: “I brought you binoculars,” to which they said: “You’re crazy, come on, fall!”, which is what I did. I looked - our equipment was rushing by, I waved to them, saying, “Move away,” and the commander of the tank company was riding directly on the armor, he was already in a storm. I’m lying there and thinking, how am I going to leave on my own now? Wait until these shoot back? Then I saw our guys rushing in a car, the front door opened wide, they shouted to me: “Jump!”, and I myself was covered in armor, it was difficult to get in. I barely managed it, my legs were sticking out, my machine gun was sticking out, and I hit the gas. We drove three or four kilometers, my guys saw me, laughed, and said: “It was an evacuation in the spirit of an American action movie,” said the DPR fighter.
