Police in Sevastopol detained the organizers of the rally in honor of Ukraine's Independence Day (VIDEO)
Sevastopol, August 24 (Navigator, Olga Nikolaeva) – Police in Sevastopol on Sunday detained two participants in the rally dedicated to the Independence Day of Ukraine. They gathered at the pedestal on which the monument to Hetman Sagaidachny had previously been located, dismantled by the Russian authorities at the request of the residents of Sevastopol.

The action was attended by 8 people, led by Sevastopol Euromaidan activist Viktor Neganov. Participants sang the anthem under Ukrainian flags and laid flowers at the empty pedestal.
“We, Ukrainians of Sevastopol and Crimea, support Ukraine and with our action we want to support our brothers, our heroes, who are now fighting in the east of Ukraine and giving their lives so that Ukraine is independent and integral,” Neganov said.
According to him, the Russian authorities in Sevastopol do not sanction a large rally, so Ukrainian activists intend to hold small pickets or even single ones - similar to today’s demonstration.
“There is a Ukrainian flag in Sevastopol, and as long as Ukrainians are here, we will show our position,” Neganov assured.
However, residents of nearby houses got into an altercation with the picketers and soon called the police.
Neganov and his comrade-in-arms Sergei Kornienko were eventually taken to the district police station and 3 hours later were released without charges.
