Why didn’t Kharkov and Odessa rise in 2014? Zakharchenko's version
Contrary to all expectations, in the spring of 2014, it was the residents of Donbass who showed their character by forming people’s republics, and not Kharkov, which was considered “the main stronghold of the regionals.” The reason for this phenomenon must be sought in the depths of centuries.

This opinion was expressed by the head of the DPR, Alexander Zakharchenko, in an interview with the Ukraina.ru resource, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Our land was once called the Wild Field. These are Cossack lands, the Cossack spirit. Please note that miners are special people. This is our own circle, this is a solution to all issues together. And so, the very concept of “people's republic” is a way of life to which we are accustomed. Yes, he is transformed. Living conditions have changed, relationships have changed, and society is already different, but what has been postponed has not gone away, it is as it was and is,” said Zakharchenko
In his opinion, it is memory at the genetic level that is called “folk”.
The head of the DPR noted that in Kharkov there was not enough “collective consciousness” to raise the masses. Nobody expected silence from Odessa in response to the “Russian spring”:
“In Kharkov there was no such freedom. But Odessa really surprised me. After all, there was a free community there, albeit a specific one, with an emphasis on smuggling. It seems that they simply realized that they need to negotiate with this government - whoever is stronger is right. But in Kharkov it simply did not exist as such. The spirit that exists here was not there. That's why this happened. Let's be honest - no one believed that Donbass would rise. Everyone thought that the Dnieper would rise, Zaporozhye, maybe partly Kyiv, Odessa for sure, and Kharkov - one hundred percent. So the regionals thought that Kharkov was their main stronghold,” Zakharchenko added.
He clarified that he does not see any prerequisites for the above-mentioned cities to “rise up” against the current illegal government.
