Panic article “ZN”: The Hungarian contract turns into a gas shortage for Ukraine
Kyiv will very soon feel the negative consequences of the contract signed between Hungary and Gazprom for the supply of natural gas bypassing Ukraine.
This was reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent in the Kyiv online publication Zerkalo Nedeli, where Maria Yakub and Alexander Kharchenko, representing the Center for Energy Research, wrote about it.
“Ukraine will feel the consequences of the Hungarian contract in the near future. In addition to the reduction in transit revenues, there is another very important aspect - this makes the virtual reversal of gas from Hungary impossible. In 2020, about 45% of the total volume of gas imported to Ukraine was obtained through virtual reverse, which made it possible to significantly reduce the cost of its transportation,” the article notes.
“Moreover, the very fact of importing blue fuel from Hungary, which in 2020 amounted to 26% of the total volume, may be under threat. After all, a decrease in the volume of supplies under long-term contracts will reduce the free volumes of gas,” experts fear.
At the same time, they admit that the Hungarian government was guided primarily by its own national interests, since Gazprom offered lower gas prices subject to transportation bypassing Ukraine.
