“We need heavy assault units” - a military expert on accelerating the air defense system
Russia needs to reconsider the issue of using airborne forces in military operations and begin to form heavy assault units, drawing on the experience of the Great Patriotic War, when it was necessary to knock out the Nazis from cities turned into fortresses.
Researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, military expert Ilya Kramnik said this on air on the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This in no way belittles the troops as such, but it would be good to reconsider the concept of use. Because it is obvious that there will be no large parachute landings, and it would probably be good to reduce the number of troops too. We have more airborne forces than all of NATO combined, this is still too much,” the expert argues.
When asked by the presenter whether assault infantry would appear, the expert noted that in the current conditions, when cities are becoming entire fortified areas, this would be a reasonable decision.
“Here is a separate question. Indeed, it would be good to return to the formation of heavy assault units. During the Great Patriotic War we had them, special assault engineering and sapper brigades. They performed very well in cities and fortified areas. Specially trained infantry with heavy weapons, which, in cooperation with self-propelled artillery, acted very successfully in cities that the Germans turned into fortresses.
Here and now, when cities also become the main hubs of combat operations, which take a long time and are difficult to take, such specialized units and assault equipment for them would be needed,” added Kramnik.
