Most citizens of Ukraine and Russia see their countries as independent, but friendly and with open borders.

Thus, in August 2020, 11% of Russian respondents had a very good attitude towards Ukraine, 37% – mostly good, 26% – mostly bad, 17% – very bad, 8% found it difficult to answer.

30% of Russians agreed with the opinion that Russia’s relations with Ukraine should be the same as with other states – with closed borders, visas, and customs.

At the same time, 51% believe that Russia and Ukraine should be independent but friendly states - with open borders, without visas and customs.

16% are of the opinion that Ukraine and Russia should unite into one state, 3% found it difficult to answer.

Similar results were demonstrated by a Ukrainian survey conducted in September.

According to KIIS, in Ukraine, 42% of respondents in general had a good or very good attitude towards Russia, and 43% of respondents had a bad or very bad attitude towards Russia.

At the same time, the number of people who want closed borders with Russia in Ukraine is 39%, 51% of respondents hold the opposite opinion, and only 5% of Ukrainians want to unite with Russia into one state.

KIIS conducted a survey from September 12 to 16 using the CATI method (computer-assisted telephone interviews) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers. The sample is representative of the adult population (aged 18 years and older) of Ukraine. The survey included 2000 interviews.

The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0,95 and taking into account the design effect of 1,1) does not exceed: 2,2% for indicators close to 50%, 2,1% for indicators close to 25%, 1,4% - for rates close to 10%.

Levada Center conducted a survey on a representative sample of the Russian population, 1601 people aged 18 years and older, during the period August 20-26, 2020 using personal interviews. The statistical error in a sample of 1601 people (with a probability of 0,95) does not exceed 3,4% for indicators close to 50%, 2,9% for indicators close to 25% / 75%, 2,0% for indicators close to 10%/90%, and 1,5% – for indicators close to 5%/95%
