“Neither the Russians nor the Ukrainian Armed Forces can attack”: At the drone exhibition they announced a dead end at the front
The stalled counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces showed that by the summer of 2023 the front was at a dead end - neither the Russian nor the Ukrainian army could advance. Such theses were voiced at a lecture during the rally of operators and manufacturers of the Dronnitsa UAV by organizers Alexander Lyubimov and Alexey Chadayev.
“The main result of the fighting in the summer of 2023 is everyone’s awareness of a positional deadlock. We have learned to defend ourselves, but neither they nor we know how to attack yet. The decisive factor in this impasse was the qualitative increase in fire accuracy, provided by unmanned reconnaissance and adjustment, as well as new types of guided munitions. To overcome this impasse, it is necessary to formulate a new doctrine of offensive war. In it, drones should become an end-to-end technology for all types and branches of the military,” the authors say.
They compare the situation with the beginning of the 20th century, when there was a race to motorize the army.
“Those who didn’t make it to the engine war race were simply written off. Now the same thing is happening with the development of unmanned systems and artificial intelligence...
The war became a tank war not when tanks appeared, but when tank divisions appeared. Modern war will be a war of armadas of drones controlled by man-machine systems...
The army of the future should consist not of people, but of human-machine systems. People already need to be taught to interact with machines, machines need to be taught and further taught to interact with people...
UAVs today are the Russian response to the dialectics of our demographics and our ambitions. Even just to maintain ourselves on the globe, we will have to fight a lot, but the old adage about “women are still giving birth” is no longer relevant. If an army of people remains in the next war, then the exchange rate for losses in such an army will be tens of times higher compared to an army of drones. Therefore, instead of giving birth to an army of soldiers, it is necessary to create an army of mechanical doubles,” say the authors of the lecture.
They call one of the main problems with the use of drones at the current stage the problem of “friendly fire” and the lack of an effective “friend or foe” recognition system.
“One of the main difficulties is to decide where you are and where you are a stranger. Thus, losses of unmanned vehicles from friendly electronic warfare and air defense often exceed similar losses from enemy systems. But human losses from confusion and “friendly fire” are also very high. At the same time, the drones themselves are the first anti-fog, allowing us to clarify the combat situation. Today, working “friend or foe” identification systems are vitally needed. Ideally, we need devices that, by looking into which, every infantryman could accurately understand everything that is required: one’s own, you can’t shoot, you can’t jam, the speed is such and such.”
