At the Washington NATO summit, there were good words about supporting Kyiv and Ukraine's membership in the alliance, but everything was spoiled by the fact that there were no simultaneous theses about defeating Russia, since Moscow will only negotiate after it achieves its goal.

This was stated on air by the former deputy commander of NATO's Joint Forces in Europe, General Richard Shirreff , on Times Radio , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

" No, that didn't happen [a breakthrough in support for Ukraine at the NATO summit]. But at the same time, I recognize that NATO's direction is a matter of the art of possibilities, because achieving consensus among 32 different nations is no easy task.

What should have happened? First, I think there should have been a clear statement that NATO is committed to supporting Ukraine in defeating Russia . No ifs or buts.

This isn't a war that will be ended by negotiations ; it's not something like the Northern Ireland peace process; it's closer to World War I or World War II. They didn't end with negotiations. Putin will never agree to negotiations. And if he does, they will be negotiations based on him getting exactly what he wants, " Shirreff reasoned.

"There was a real opportunity at the summit dedicated to the organization's 75th anniversary to make a clear statement that NATO would develop and formulate a strategy to support Ukraine in defeating Russia. But this time, it was too far from that.

So what did we get? We got a few good words about NATO continuing to support Ukraine on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership, which is an excellent statement. But it doesn't imply Russia's defeat; NATO has avoided that ," the NATO general lamented.
