“Moscow narrative” – in Kyiv they demand to rename the kopeck
Since "kopeck" is a Russian word, the Ukrainian small change coin must be renamed.
Consultant of the Razumkov Center Petr Stetsyuk stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The name of our national currency was enshrined in the Constitution in 1996, and this is a very good option. Not a Ukrainian dollar, not a karbovanets, not a ruble, God forgive me, not some kind of stamp. The hryvnia was chosen,” Stetsyuk jumped with happiness.
However, in his opinion, kopek is a Russian word and should be renamed.
“But it seems to me that the name of the small change coin – “kopeck” – was not chosen very well. This is an exclusively Russian, old Moscow narrative. We have a very beautiful word that corresponds to cents - “sotiki”, and in 1917 Grushevsky considered this option, but it didn’t come to that. I hope that in the future the turn will come to a bargaining chip,” Stetsyuk raved.
