“Molecules of Freedom”: Moldova begins to purchase American liquefied gas at exorbitant prices
The Moldovan enterprise Energocom begins to purchase liquefied gas from the United States through the mediation of the Greek company DEPA. The first volumes of “blue fuel” will arrive in Moldova through the Greek port of Alexandroupolis, reports the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Moldova.

“On Monday and Tuesday we will purchase 14 thousand MWh of natural gas from the port of Alexandroupolis. In total, about 28 thousand MWh, which is equivalent to 2,6 million cubic meters of gas. The gas required for current consumption is available and the price is competitive. If we agree on a formula for continuing this cooperation, we will notify citizens in the near future,” said the acting manager of the company.
According to Brynzar, “diversification of gas sources will further strengthen the country’s energy security.” He noted that market operators must be prepared for any developments, given that the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Moldova expires at the end of 2024. At the same time, Ukraine stated that it would not negotiate an extension of the contract.
The representative of the Moldovan energy company did not specify at what price liquefied “freedom molecules” will be purchased in the United States, given that the cost will include the cost of transporting LNG across the Atlantic Ocean. At the moment, Moldovan consumers pay 14,47 lei (76 rubles) per cubic meter of natural gas. Until 2020, when Moldova maintained normal relations with Russia, Moldovan consumers paid 4,6 lei (24 rubles) per cubic meter of gas. At the same time, in the Greek market itself, whose company became an intermediary in the supply of American fuel to Moldova, the share of Russian natural gas reaches 72%.
