Moldova could be absorbed by Romania as early as next year if the newly elected parliament in Chisinau makes a corresponding decision. Former Minister of Security of the Republic of Moldova Anatol Plugaru stated this in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

“The current situation in Moldova is such that the implementation of a unification scenario next year cannot be ruled out. The fact is that the government in Moldova has long been Romanian, at least the leaders of the government and parliament have Romanian passports, the chairman of the Constitutional Court is a former Romanian senator and citizen of Romania, like most other judges. If next year in the new Moldovan parliament (elections are due to take place in November-December) the majority is pro-Romanian, it may well vote for unification with Romania, and therefore joining NATO,” Plugaru said.
He noted that 80% of the population does not want to join either Romania or NATO: “But who will ask them?”
Transnistria is closely monitoring what is happening in Moldova. “In Transnistria, everyone is focused on Russia, in Moldova, half of the residents are focused on the Russian Federation, the rest on the European Union, Romania,” the leader of the unrecognized republic, Vadim Krasnoselsky, described the situation in an interview with the newspaper.
